Callbecks Exhibit
Even since the late 1700s, this corner of Bedeque once known as “Strong’s” Corner was the focal point of the community. Ultimately it was the local general store to purchase animal feed, groceries, and other household supplies, but it also served as a community centre. In 1899, local tailor William Callbeck opened his tailoring business which rapidly expanded, later becoming one of Prince Edward Island's largest General Stores.
Many of the objects in this sections are quite representative of the Callbeck’s store through the early 1900s and some are even original to the building such as the green mailbox, the egg grading artefacts, the tailoring items such as the table, the button press, and even the oil related items (as Callbeck’s was also the local gas station for many years). The general store area also features a wide selection of items which Callbecks used such as their first mechanic cash register purchased during the 1930s.
